Maiko (apprentice geisha) Katsufumi at the Hanagasa Junko Procession, part of the month long Gion Matsuri (Festival). The festival takes place annually in Kyoto and is one of the most famous festivals in Japan.


Kyoto was the capital of Japan from 1794 until 1868. It is now the seventh largest city in Japan. In Kyoto geisha are known as geiko and trainee geisha are known as maiko.
